HOW to Guide | Prepare for a Newborn Photoshoot

Updated: Sep 8, 2023

Newborn photoshoots are a fantastic way to record those first few moments of your baby's life. Whether it's a first baby or a new addition to your family. This is just a wonderful type of photography because instead of focusing on the entire body, as possibly I would for other types of portrait photography, I focus on the little details.

WHEN SHOULD I BOOK IN A NEWBORN PHOTOSHOOT...

There are no fixed rules as to when you should book your shoot, I have photographed babies between 1-8 weeks old! A lot will depend on you and how you are feeling, and obviously how little one is developing.

At one week old, you will capture all those tiny little features that soon grow bigger and bigger. But at 4-8 weeks old you'll see more features developing and longer eye lashes, eyes will be open more and we may even get a smile! The initial first few weeks after a baby has been born can be exhausting and might throw the household into an excitable frenzy! So by the 4th week, things tend to have calmed down into some sort of routine. If for any reason you want to change or postpone the date, that would be completely fine. A first payment of £25 is taken at time of booking, so that we secure the date in the diary. The remainder of the fee must be paid in advance before the shoot.

WHERE WILL THE SHOOT TAKE PLACE...

The shoot itself will take place within your home* and I will set up a soft light to give us a natural continuous light source, and no other props. My style is very much a natural and relaxed style of photography rather than a stylised studio shoot. This is important to know before booking a photographer, does their style suit your own vision? We can use a bed or a sofa to shoot on, but I would choose a room in your home that you feel relaxed and comfortable in and one that has good natural lighting.

*I'm based in Whitley Bay, so travel within a five mile radius is included. Anything further afield will incur my fixed travel costs as detailed here.

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR...

If the shoot is just for your baby, then I suggest light coloured clothing, with as much white as possible. The only must for me is to have clothing that shows off your baby's feet and toes - they make for some of the cutest photos! If you (and/or your partner) are wanting photos with your baby, then I would suggest you wear something that looks cohesive and suits your style.

Photos will be taken in colour, unless you specifically want Black & White. It you go for a B&W option, then very simple light clothing will work.

WHAT POSES WILL YOU PHOTOGRAPH...

My aim is to photograph your baby in as much detail as I can, focusing on the tiny details such as the fingers and toes. I love showing the difference in size between parents and baby, and there are a number of ways to do this. Again if we have young siblings joining in, then these make for great photos if we can capture these size difference. Feet and hands are the best way to do this. There are some really fun poses that you could do to show off feet sizes, have a look at Pinterest for ideas if this is what you'd like. I will say though that nothing can be predicted in a newborn shoot, and I will just work around your baby. Crying or feeding during a shoot is quite normal so don't worry!

HOW DO WE BOOK...

Message me directly with your due date and when you're thinking of having the shoot. Once I have all your details, I'll send you out an invoice that will require a £25 first payment to secure the date, then the remainder payable before I come out to you. If you decide not to go ahead with the shoot, for any reason, then the £25 is kept on account for any future photo shoots. It is transferable to another family, if you wish.

There is also an option to purchase a photoshoot as a gift voucher, if you wish to do that, then you can order right here.....

BEST ADVICE....

Just relax and enjoy it! My style is definitely informal, as a photographer I just want everyone to feel relaxed and at ease!
